Friday - Last Day of School

We went out with a bang today.  We put the kiddos in diapers and let 'em lose with paint. It was a total blast and felt like such a wonderful way to end the school year.

Today was truly bitter-sweet.  As hard as it is to say goodbye, we also know it is time for these kiddos to move on and grow and change!  We are always here - please feel free to touch in for anything!

And...THANK YOU! Thanks for sharing your babies with us.  Thanks for sharing your time, energy, care, concern, and enthusiasm.  Thanks for checking in each day here at the blog to see what we've been up to in the classroom.

Have such a wonderful summer everyone!  We wish you lots of sun, smiles, and time to relax!

Hugs Galore,

The 1B educators

Wednesday - Field Day Picnic!

What a wonderful day!  It was such a treat to spend the morning outside at Washington Market Park with so many wonderful people.  We made and chased bubbles, we got wet, we drank juice, we put on silly tattoos (SO many silly tattoos), and we munched on summer treats like watermelon, blueberries, ice pops, and cheddar bunnies.

Parents, thank you for all the help and for being there!  It would not have been the same without you all.  All the kiddos seemed to have a really wonderful time!

Tuesday

We played with bubbles today!  There were bubbles for washing babies, bubbles for popping, bubbles that we made on our own, and bubbles that we chased.

These last few days of school before summer are always ones to be cherished.  It is a time to reflect on who the children are now and who they were when they first began the school year.  Each of them have changed so much and made so many wonderful memories together as a group.

Monday

Because the kiddos seemed to really, really enjoy taking care of the babies on Friday, we set them up to play with water, bubbles, towels and babies for today.  So many wonderful concepts to explore in one play scenerio.  Some explored how the towel held the water (science concpets) and others diligently attended to their babies to ensure that they were squeaky clean and bone dry (dramatic play)!

Friday

We had fun chompin' and slurpin' on watermelon and mongos!  What a fun way to spend our Friday morning.  The rest of the day was spent taking care of our babies, getting classical with Isabella for music, and engaging in lots of pretend play with our dinosaurs!

Thursday

After spending some time in the classroom exploring our bus, we headed outside to enjoy the lovely weather!  Everyone seemed to really enjoy running around.  We saw THREE excavators IN ACTION as we approached school on our way back to eat lunch.  The kiddos kept repeating, "so many excavators," parroting what they had heard their teacher say.  It's pretty adorable to listen to a bunch of two-year olds say tricky, four syllable words like "excavator."

Wednesday

We did some silly, fun, physical painting today.  You take pantyhose and fill them different materials (rice, beans, cotton balls).  Because of the stretch in the stockings, there's a bounce to the painting process.  The set-up provides a fun way to explore something familiar.

Friday

During music with Isabella today, many of the kids grabbed "guitars" (blocks) to play along with her.  It was such a fun way to actively participate in the music lesson.  To see the kiddos use our blocks in this way is actually a sign of early reading and writing skills.  Before we can read or write letters we must understand that a mark can represent a letter, much like a block can represent a guitar.

Thursday

Many of the kiddos dress up and pretend to go to "work."  This play could symbolize many things.  They could want to pretend to be like their favorite people in the world (mom and dad).  Or maybe, they could want to play out being in a position of control - getting to do the leaving on their own terms, much like parents get to do in the morning.  We got curious - what do they think happens at "work?" So, during Circle Time, the children were asked:  What do mommies and daddies do when they go to work?  Here are some of the answers we got:

"They have a computer."

"They go up an elevator."

"They make phone calls."

"I have candies in my pockets and coat."  (Sadly, no candies were found.)

Wednesday

While sitting with the kiddos today we talked about what our big boxes could be.  While the children have played with the boxes we have heard words like "house," or "I'm at work."  However, when asked more formally about the boxes we got an answer that took a different tern.  The students have decided to turn the boxes into a bus.  A "yellow" bus.  It was also suggested that the boxes could be lollipops...but, we are going with bus.

Tuesday

Our big, fun box has returned to the classroom.  A few modifications have been added to encourage some dramatic play!  We would like to ask the students what they think we could make with this former box!

Friday

Wednesday

The kiddos have been so into imaginary play this week.  Everyone is dressing up in our pretend clothes, making phone calls to their mommies and daddies on our pretend phones, hopping on the bus to head to work, and making food for our buddies to eat!  It is so fun to see how they experience the world through their play.  We hope to push this play in to a rich direction by creating time for them to explore these ideas even more thoroughly!

Friday

The 1B butterflies were released today! We headed to Washington Market Park and hung out near the community garden now full of flowers, shade, and strong, refreshing breezes.  The spot really seemed perfect as a place for our little fluttery buddies to embark on their journey into the great outdoors, beyond BMS.  It was funny - the butterflies needed some convincing to leave their (laundry hamper) home - could they have wanted to stay at BMS with us?!  Beacause of this, the kiddos got a nice long, close-up look at these guys before saying, "farewell friends!" We also had watermelon, guzzeled water, and ran around.  A lot.
